Malta's crystal-clear waters, stunning coastlines, and rich history make it a kayaking paradise. As a year-round kayaking company and community of free kayakers, Get Out and Kayak Malta is thrilled to guide you through the top three kayaking routes from 2024 that showcase the island's natural beauty and cultural heritage.
1. The Grand Harbour & Three Cities Tour

Overview: This tour offers a unique perspective of Valletta's Grand Harbour and the historic Three Cities. Paddle through sheltered waters, explore ancient fortifications, and immerse yourself in Malta's maritime history.
Two Starting Points:
1. Kalkara Harbour: Begin your adventure inside the harbour itself. A scenic spot, reachable via Kalkara's new boardwalk, offers stunning views of the Three Cities. This is a quieter starting point for those looking to escape the crowds.

Colorful kayaks of the Rainbow Fleet await adventure at Mandragg ta' Birgu, set against a scenic waterfront backdrop. 2. Manoel Island, Gzira: A more central starting point, offering easy access from the city. GPS Coordinates: 35.9075° N, 14.4970° E, which allows you to enter from the Breakwater itself!

Colorful kayaks lined up on the shore, ready for an adventure in the sunny marina and beyond!
Parking: Public parking is available near both starting points.
Getting There: Accessible via public transport or a short drive from central locations.
Weather and Wind Conditions: For optimal conditions, check forecasts on Windfinder and Maltese Island Weather.
What to Bring:
Summer: Two liters of water, 50+ SPF sunscreen, snacks, a towel, a change of clothes, sunglasses, a waterproof headtorch, proper footwear, a sun hat, and SPF clothing.
Off-Season: Layered clothing, waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat, and the above. Some prefer neoprene and even paddlesuits to prevent getting wet.
Highlights:
Explore the historic forts and bastions of Valletta. The significance of these defensive structures dates back centuries, with Fort St. Angelo playing a crucial role during the Great Siege of 1565.
Paddle through the narrow creeks of the Three Cities, offering hidden gems like the Fort Ricasoli area.
The Breakwater itself is a sight to behold, and it served to protect the Grand Harbour during wartime.
Opportunities for photography at Fort St. Angelo and the Grand Harbour.
Snorkel in the clear waters around Fort Ricasoli.

Team members paddle their way from Manoel Island to The Grand Harbour, enjoying a sunny and scenic team-building adventure.
2. Mistra Bay to Selmun/St. Paul's Islands
Overview: This route combines natural beauty with historical sites, including the legendary St. Paul's Islands, where St. Paul was shipwrecked in 60 AD, according to Christian tradition. His presence on these islands is a major part of Malta’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

Starting Point: Mistra Bay, Mellieha
GPS Coordinates: 35.9570° N, 14.3580° E
Parking: Available at Mistra Bay.
Getting There: Accessible by car or public transport from Mellieha.
Weather and Wind Conditions: Check forecasts on Windfinder and Maltese Island Weather.
What to Bring:
Summer: Water, 50+ SPF sunscreen, snacks, towel, change of clothes, sunglasses, proper footwear, sun hat, and SPF clothing.
Off-Season: Layered clothing, waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat and the above.
Highlights:
Visit the iconic St. Paul's Islands. St. Paul was famously shipwrecked here in AD 60, and the island has since become a place of historical significance, often tied to Malta's deep Christian roots.
Paddle past the rugged coastline of Selmun.
Photograph the natural arch near the islands.
Snorkel in the clear waters around the islands.

Note: There are no facilities at either location, so be sure to come fully prepared. During the winter months, we recommend wearing neoprene if you plan to submerge or practice rolling, but it’s not strictly necessary unless you intend to get wet.
3. San Tumas to Xrobb l-Għaġin & Il-Hofriet
Overview: This route is perfect for paddlers who enjoy exploring caves, dramatic coastal landscapes, and the pristine nature of Malta’s southern shores. While St. Peter’s Pool is best for advanced paddlers, we suggest the Xrobb l-Għaġin and Il-Hofriet route as a safer, equally scenic alternative.

Starting Point: San Tumas Bay, Marsascala
GPS Coordinates: 35.8580° N, 14.5520° E
Parking: Available near the starting point.
Getting There: Accessible by car or public transport from Marsascala.
Weather and Wind Conditions: Check forecasts on Windfinder and Maltese Island Weather.
What to Bring:
Summer: Water, 50+ SPF sunscreen, snacks, towel, change of clothes, sunglasses, waterproof headtorch, proper footwear, sun hat, and SPF clothing.
Off-Season: Layered clothing, waterproof jacket, gloves, and a hat.
Highlights:
Explore the Munxar Arch (DO NOT GO UNDER IT) and stunning white cliffs along the way.
Navigate through sea tunnels and rock formations.
Xrobb l-Għaġin offers fantastic caves to explore, swell permitting.
The secluded Il-Hofriet offers both peaceful kayaking and opportunities for swimming and photography.

Note: For your safety, stay away from under the arch as the cliffs are notorious for falling rocks. Numerous injuries and even fatalities have occurred in this area, so please exercise caution. This route is more suitable for intermediate paddlers; for advanced paddlers, St. Peter’s Pool remains an option, but be aware of the challenging conditions.
